Description
Chew Chew Mimic is a new game made in 2023 for the NES where you play as a crafty mimic chest who must create paths for unsuspecting knights to meet their delicious demise. The game plays on a grid, there are a number of tiles you can use to guide the knights, like arrows, boxes, and springs. These are predefined on each level to set the puzzle. You place the tiles on the level then set the knights free and watch as your devious plan comes to life.
History
Chew Chew Mimic was imagined by YouTuber John Riggs and pitched to Alastair Low of Lowtek Games after they met at a couple of retro game conventions. Both were fans of Chu Chu Rocket and always wanted to make something similar but with a spin on the idea. The game was quickly underway building on the engine used in Lowtek’s previous game Tapeworm Disco Puzzle with Valdir Salgueiro handling the code. Alastair and John designed the levels and within a few months, the game was ready.
-
Why the nes?
Lowtek Games had already produced 2 successful new games through Kickstarter and John is known for his retro games and homebrew content.
-
Why Dreamcast?
This one might puzzle a few but like the NES community, there is also a large Dreamcast homebrew community with new games being released all the time. Unlike the NES, the Dreamcast had an exploit that allowed people to play burned games making it much cheaper and easier to produce essentially a CD over a custom cartridge. Lowtek Games commissioned a local programmer, Ross Killgarif, to modify an open-source NES emulator for the Dreamcast to auto-boot the NES game. It also has a custom VMU image. The process of creating a Dreamcast playable NES game has been open-sourced by Lowtek Games for everyone to enjoy. The Dreamcast version will be released at a later date.
