Description

Tapeworm Disco Puzzle is being designed to run on an NES and is a grid based puzzle game mixing elements of Snake and Lolo. You play as a tapeworm, the local night club owner. You are a tapeworm who lives inside a cassette tape.

Gameplay Each level has an elements and objectives like: -Avoid enemies -Don't kill the Fleas -Collect all the notes -Help the fleas collect the blood -Travel through wormholes -Activate doors with switches -Help Fleada get to the gig on time (Fleada is a catwalk model)

History

The game is a spin off sequel of Flea! The original concept was created when brainstorming games that could utilize the crank on the playdate. I liked the idea of using it to wind a worm back into a cassette tape. The Playdate has been delayed and the sdk was taking a long time to become available so I pitched the game to a NES Dev named Valdir, he got a prototype put and running that night and we continued to add features and levels til we got to a point that we thought was good enough to share with the world. We also brought tui, the guy who did the audio for Flea back to help us with a killer soundtrack. The game is now live on Kickstarter Will be available for NES, Dreamcast and PC and if we reach the streach goals, playdate and switch too. Tha game was funded on Kickstarter raising £15,835 from a goal of £6,000. Stretch goals for 2 player mode and Playdate port were reached. 2 player mode is in the works and playdate will be available some time after the official sdk launches.

Why the nes? A few reasons. I grew up playing the nes and always wanted to make a game for it. Flea did really well and I think this fits in the retro niche. There is also a growing community for new retro “homebrew games”, and there have been a few very successful crowdfunding campaigns for these projects. This niche group helped the project stand out among the many other modern games on Kickstarter.

Why Dreamcast? This one might puzzle a few but like the NES community there is also a large Dreamcast homebrew community with new games being released all the time. Unlike the NES, the Dreamcast had an exploit that allowed people to play burned games making it much cheaper and easier to produce essentially a CD over a custom cartridge.

Tapeworm Disco Puzzle is now available for playdate. This version is a native port written in c by Valdir Salgueiro. The crank is used as an option to wind the worm back into the tape. The game can be purchased on itchio and sideloaded onto the console.
